With an educational background in Theater and English, deep appreciation for history, and twenty years as a teaching artist, when not performing, Shalanda works in both private and public schools incorporating and teaching all three topics to students K-12.
She currently teaches theater and playwriting through Portland Center Stage's education outreach program. Shalanda has written several plays which include Who I Am Celebrating Me (which, in 2018, expanded into Black History Festival NW), Vanport, Church Girls, Full-Time Woman, Too Good To Be True as well as plays for children.
In August 2017 Shalanda released her first book, Night Rhythms, part of the Hooded Quilt series. She held her first two readings at Multnomah County Libraries, then Barnes and Noble and has attended schools as a guest author. In February, Shalanda was one of the Portland Trailblazers featured authors. Night Rhythms is one of her publisher's top-selling books.
